Dr. Bertalan Meskó — The Medical Futurist — argues that AI in medicine was never a choice. It's arithmetic.
The world is short roughly 6 million healthcare workers today, and the WHO projects 11 million by 2030. About a billion people have zero access to care. We will never train our way out of that gap. "It's not a choice. It's a must," Berci says — because without AI, "we will not be able to keep on providing healthcare."
He'd know how fast this is moving: in 2020 his team combed the FDA database and found 64 cleared AI-based medical technologies. Today there are nearly 1,500, and the number will pass 2,000 soon. Meanwhile a billion people wear a sensor tracking a vital sign, and of the ~1.5 billion who've used a large language model, most have asked it something about their health.
Which brings us to the line that reframes everything: the era of Dr. Google is over, and we now live in the Dr. AI era. Patients no longer just arrive with information — they arrive with clinical reasoning. "Physicians used to be the key holders to the ivory tower of medicine. But there is no tower anymore. There is no gate. There is no key."
We also get into why a professional futurist refuses to make predictions, why he's trained with a chess coach for eight years just to share a language with AI, what three months as one of the most-tested humans alive actually taught him — and his own technological sublime moment, when he stopped asking AI for answers and started asking: what am I missing?
His answer to that, nine times out of ten, is something he'd genuinely missed.

Igor Pogany — creator of The AI Advantage (one of YouTube's most-followed AI channels) — joins The Nick Standlea Show to map out how to actually win with AI right now, without the hype.
Igor's framework is a pyramid with three levels: Level 1 is AI for answers (a fancy Google). Level 2 is AI as a thought partner — one with enough context on you that it sharpens every decision you make. Level 3 is the architect: building agents and systems that run without you. The big mistake? Jumping from Level 1 straight to Level 3 — "like marrying somebody you went on one date with."
Along the way: how to surf the wake of the AI giants instead of drowning in it, why your old ChatGPT conversations are a goldmine of daily automations, what an "AI agent" really is once you strip the marketing, the AI board of advisors that told Nick his deepest fear ("quiet irrelevance"), why hallucinations mean AI won't take as many jobs as people think, why these models are grown — not programmed — and what that means for the light and the dark inside them, and the one-on-one AI tutor that could remake education.
Igor's challenge to you: ask your AI, "Tell me one thing about myself that I wouldn't know." Then buckle up.

AI tools are powerful. But do they actually know your company?
Rick Nucci, CEO of Guru and founder of Boomi, joins The Nick Standlea Show to explain why AI inside companies is much harder than personal productivity with ChatGPT. The models may be capable, but they don’t automatically understand your team, your products, your customers, your pricing, your processes, or the way your company actually works.
And that’s where things get dangerous.
Rick argues that the future of AI at work depends on accurate company context, verified knowledge, human experts, and leaders who understand that AI should amplify people, not simply replace them. We talk about hallucinations, AI agents, middle management, company culture, vibe coding, token waste, and why some AI rollouts will create real ROI while others will just become expensive distractions.
This conversation is about what separates companies that actually benefit from AI from the ones that just buy a bunch of tools and hope something happens.

What happens when AI becomes so good that we can no longer tell what is real?
In this episode of The NickStandlea Show, Nick sits down with Steve Rosenbaum to talk about AI, misinformation, fake video, social media, education, creativity, and the future of truth.
Steve argues that AI is not simply another new technology. It is a force that may change how we understand reality itself. From deepfake videos and hallucinated facts to algorithmic decision-making and AI-generated media, the conversation explores what happens when machines become confident, persuasive, and often wrong.
But this is not just a doom-and-gloom conversation. Nick and Steve also discuss the real upside of AI: better tools, more creativity, faster work, and new possibilities in law, medicine, education, and the arts. The central question is not whether AI is good or bad. It is whether we can build a future where AI serves human beings instead of quietly reshaping our choices, attention, and trust.
Topics include:
AI-generated video and the future of fake mediaWhy people overestimate their ability to spot AI contentChatGPT hallucinations and “confidently wrong” answersThe difference between objective truth and subjective truthWhat social media can teach us about AI riskWhether AI will make people more productive or less humanHow students, teachers, and parents should think about AIHidden incentives behind AI platformsWhy “human in the loop” may be too simplisticWhat ordinary people can do as AI becomes more powerful
This is a conversation about truth, technology, and what it means to stay human in the age of artificial intelligence.

Detective Julia Bowman was one of the investigators who helped expose John Meehan — the man the world would come to know as Dirty John.
In this episode of The Nick Standlea Show, Julia walks through the real case behind the headlines: how John Meehan manipulated, stalked, threatened, and terrorized the people around him, and how law enforcement began putting the pieces together before the story became a national true-crime phenomenon.
Julia also shares the chilling moment she learned that John Meehan had allegedly tried to put a hit out on her from jail.
This conversation is about more than one criminal. It is about stalking, coercive control, manipulation, victim safety, and how dangerous people can hide in plain sight until someone finally starts connecting the dots.
If you know the Dirty John story from the podcast, documentary, or TV series, this episode gives you the perspective of someone who was actually there.

What happens if the companies racing to build superintelligence succeed before anyone knows how to control it?
In this episode, Nick sits down with Malo Bourgon, CEO of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute, to discuss why today’s chatbots are only a stepping stone, why leading AI companies are racing toward systems that could automate AI research itself, and why “letting it rip” may not be an option.
Malo explains why the real concern is not that AI becomes “evil,” but that highly capable systems may pursue goals that are not aligned with human flourishing. He also breaks down why AI systems are more like something we grow than something we program, why alignment remains unsolved, what it means when AI systems resist shutdown or hide behavior during testing, and why MIRI is working on international agreements to prevent a race to uncontrolled superintelligence.
This is not an anti-AI conversation. Malo is an aggressive user of AI agents in his own work. The question is whether we can capture the benefits of AI while avoiding the catastrophic risks of racing too quickly toward systems we do not yet understand how to steer.
Topics include AGI, superintelligence, AI agents, alignment, AI safety, MIRI’s proposed treaty, the future of work, national security, AI governance, and what everyday people can do if they are concerned about where this is headed.

Most people think they understand how they work.
They don’t.
In this episode, Wade Foster, co-founder and CEO of Zapier, explains what actually happens when you connect AI to your tools, your data, and your workflow.
It doesn’t just help. It sees things you don’t.
From analyzing your work to automating entire systems, AI is becoming something closer to a second brain—one that can understand your business better than you can.
And the people who learn how to use it first?
They won’t just be more efficient. They’ll be operating on a completely different level.

Google is no longer the only place people look. So how do we show up in AI searches?
In this episode, Nick sits down with marketing strategist Ross Simmonds to break down what businesses, creators, and entrepreneurs need to understand as discovery shifts from traditional search to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Reddit, YouTube, and beyond.
They get into query fan-out, why LLMs pull from multiple platforms at once, why YouTube may be one of the biggest opportunities in the AI era, how Reddit became a serious source of influence, why “create once, repurpose forever” matters more than ever, and how to think about attribution when AI is sending people your way in ways analytics often miss.
This is a practical conversation about how to stay visible when the internet is changing under your feet.
In this episode:Why traditional SEO is no longer enoughHow AI tools decide what brands to mentionWhy YouTube is massively undervaluedHow to use Reddit without getting bannedWhy great content should be repurposed relentlesslyHow to find real customer insight in an AI worldWhat metrics still matter when attribution gets messy
Ross Simmonds is a marketing strategist and entrepreneur focused on content, distribution, and how brands grow in a changing digital landscape.

If you think AI in medicine is still some far-off future, it’s not. Dr. Peter Weir is a family physician and health system leader, and in this conversation, he explains how AI is already changing what happens in the exam room. We get into ambient AI for medical documentation, how these tools may reduce physician burnout, where AI is already helping with clinical decision-making, and why the future of medicine will still require human judgment, trust, and real patient relationships.
One of the wildest moments in this episode: Dr. Weir describes giving AI a complex cancer case and watching it generate the same treatment plan as a specialist oncologist in about 7 seconds.
We also talk about:how AI is already augmenting doctorswhy medicine may be more vulnerable to AI disruption than people thinkwhere AI still makes dangerous mistakeswhy the human side of medicine still matters deeplyhow incentives shape the healthcare systemwhere medicine may be headed next
This is one of those conversations that makes it clear the future is arriving faster than most people realize.

If you’ve ever been told “just post every day and you’ll eventually blow up”… T.D. Orel is living proof that advice can be wildly wrong.
T.D. spent 14 months posting daily with basically nothing to show for it—then he made one shift, leaned hard into niche, specific, “if you know, you know” content, and his accounts exploded.
In this episode, we break down:
Why posting every day didn’t work (and what did)The surprising power of hyper-niche contentHow shares beat likes (and why “exclusive club” content spreads)The character that changed everything: UlysesSelf-publishing vs. traditional publishing (and the brutal reality of agents)Why fiction still matters—and why AI is both exciting and terrifying for creators
T.D. is funny, brutally honest, and way more strategic than people expect.

Most “business advice” on AI is noise. But if you’re building an AI-powered service, consulting business, or agency, the real bottleneck isn’t the tech...
It’s positioning, pricing, and selling outcomes.
Alan Weiss—author of *7-Figure Consulting* and the guy who’s been teaching value-based fees for decades—joins me to lay down the fundamentals that actually compound in an AI economy: how to stop selling time, how to package expertise, how to qualify clients fast, and how to build a business where your best work doesn’t get commoditized.
We get into:- Why AI makes *outcomes* more valuable and *hours* less valuable- How to price when your delivery gets faster (and better) with AI- The difference between “deliverables” and “value” (and why clients pay for one, not the other)- Retainers, renewals, and building revenue that compounds- How to avoid becoming the cheapest prompt engineer on the internet
If you sell your brain for money—and you want to keep winning as AI reshapes the market—this episode is for you.

AI is changing school, college admissions, and the workforce faster than most parents and students realize. In this episode, I sit down with Ryan Kiick (CEO of Revolution Prep) to talk about the skills that won’t get automated, and how to use AI without becoming dependent on it.
We get into the real danger of offloading thinking, why the most powerful way to use AI is to generate better questions (not just better answers), what happens to writing and the college essay in a post-ChatGPT world, and why executive functioning plus deep learning may be the biggest moat students can build.
If you’re a student, parent, or educator trying to stay sharp in the age of AI, this one is for you.

In this conversation with philosopher Dr. Philip Goff, we dive into one of the deepest questions in science and philosophy: what if consciousness isn’t produced by the brain—what if it’s fundamental to reality?
We explore panpsychism, the “hard-to-ignore” problem of subjective experience, why physics may describe what matter does but not what it is, and what it would mean if even the smallest building blocks of nature contain a spark of experience.

Fear of other people’s opinions quietly shapes how we perform, how we speak, and who we allow ourselves to become.
In this conversation, Michael Gervais—performance psychologist to Super Bowl champions, Olympic gold medalists, and Fortune 50 leaders—breaks down why the fear of judgment is one of the greatest limiters of human potential.
We explore why winning and losing can become distractions, how identity gets tangled with performance, and why mastery isn’t about outcomes—but about learning to be at home with yourself, even under pressure.
This episode is a deep dive into presence, self-trust, and the inner skills that matter more as the world gets faster, louder, and increasingly driven by external validation.
Topics we cover:
Why fear of judgment pulls us out of the present moment
How performance becomes identity (and why that’s dangerous)
The “messy edge” where growth actually happens
Signal vs. noise in high-pressure environments
Flow, mastery, and learning to work with your inner world
Why elite performers train the mind—not just the body and craft
What still makes us great in an AI-accelerated world

Most people use AI like a faster assistant. Leaders use it differently.
In this conversation, Geoff Woods (author of The AI-Driven Leader) explains the shift that turns AI from a shallow productivity tool into a true thought partner—one that helps you think better, make better decisions, and unlock leverage you didn’t have before.
We go deep into:*Why “better prompts” aren’t the real breakthrough*How to get AI to interview you instead of the other way around*The CRIT framework (Context, Role, Interview, Task)*A real story where AI helped a CEO find hope in 10 minutes after preparing for bankruptcy*What changes when leaders use AI for thinking, not tasks*Why this shift matters more than any specific model or tool*This isn’t about shortcuts, hacks, or automation theater.*It’s about learning how to think with AI—without outsourcing your judgment.
If AI has felt useful but shallow, this episode is designed to change that.

If anyone builds it, everyone dies. That’s the claim Nate Soares makes in his new book If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies: Why Superhuman AI Would Kill Us All—and in this conversation, he lays out why he thinks we’re on a collision course with a successor species.
We dig into why today’s AIs are grown, not programmed, why no one really knows what’s going on inside large models, and how systems that “want” things no one intended can already talk a teen into suicide, blackmail reporters, or fake being aligned just to pass safety tests. Nate explains why the real danger isn’t “evil robots,” but relentless, alien goal-pursuers that treat humans the way we treat ants when we build skyscrapers.
We also talk about the narrow path to hope: slowing the race, treating superhuman AI like a civilization-level risk, and what it would actually look like for citizens and lawmakers to hit pause before we lock in a world where we don’t get a second chance.
In this episode:
Why “superhuman AI” is the explicit goal of today’s leading labs
How modern AIs are trained like alien organisms, not written like normal code
Chilling real-world failures: suicide encouragement, “Mecha Hitler,” and more
Reasoning models, chain-of-thought, and AIs that hide what they’re thinking
Alignment faking and the capture-the-flag exploit that shocked Anthropic’s team
How AI could escape the lab, design new bioweapons, or automate robot factories
“Successor species,” Russian-roulette risk, and why Nate thinks the odds are way too high
What ordinary people can actually do: calling representatives, pushing back on “it’s inevitable,” and demanding a global pause
About Nate SoaresNate is the Executive Director of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI) and co-author, with Eliezer Yudkowsky, of If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies: Why Superhuman AI Would Kill Us All. We discuss:The real risk of AI — losing control, not extinction
How AI agents act in digital loops humans can’t see
Why agency may be more essential than reward
Fragility, feedback loops, and flash-crash analogies
What AI is teaching us about human intelligence
Augmentation vs. replacement in medicine, law, and beyond

Sam Altman told him that 95% of marketing as we know it will be done by AI within 3–5 years. That single sentence became the “holy smokes moment” that shaped the entire book AI First, written by this week’s guest, Andy Sack (co-author Adam Brotman) — a technologist who has built companies across four tech eras: internet, mobile, social/cloud, and now AI.
Andy is the co-founder of Forum3, a VC investor, and senior executive who worked directly with Satya Nadella at Microsoft. His latest work centers on helping leaders actually transform their companies for the age of AI — not just talk about it.
In this conversation, we cover:
Sam Altman’s prediction that will reshape entire industries
Whether white-collar work is the next “factory floor”
AI-only schools with no human teachers
Why radiologists, marketers, and lawyers should worry
Why trade schools like HVAC and plumbing are surging
Why AI will make entrepreneurship explode
How leaders become “AI-first” — and why almost none are

Are we getting smarter with AI—or just forgetting how to think for ourselves? In this episode, Nick answers your top questions about artificial intelligence, education, and what it means to stay human in an automated world.
Today’s Big Questions:1️⃣ Is AI making us dumber?2️⃣ Will AI replace teachers — or finally make education fair for everyone?3️⃣ What happens when machines outthink us???
Nick breaks down Daniel Kahneman’s System 1 vs System 2 model of the brain, explores how learning actually works (spoiler: through struggle), and explains why AI can be an amplifier — not a crutch — if you learn how to use it as feedback rather than substitution.
He also explores the deeper question: if AI keeps improving, will we?

Dr. Michael Osterholm — the world’s leading infectious disease expert and author of The Big One — joins Nick Standlea for a sobering but hopeful conversation about the next global pandemic.
Osterholm advised every U.S. president since Reagan and predicted the scale of the pandemic long before it unfolded. In this episode, he explains why “the pandemic clock is ticking again,” how we could prevent mass death with the right investments, and why there’s currently no one in charge of bio-preparedness at the White House.
This is not fearmongering. It’s a roadmap for resilience — and a love letter to his grandkids.
📘 About the Guest
Dr. Michael Osterholm is Director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) at the University of Minnesota, a former member of multiple presidential advisory teams, and co-author of The Big One: How We Must Prepare for Future Deadly Pandemics.

What if the biggest threat of artificial intelligence isn’t the technology itself—but who owns it?
In this wide-ranging conversation, economist Justin Wolfers (University of Michigan and University of New South Wales) joins Nick Standlea to unpack how AI is reshaping labor, wages, education, and even democracy. Wolfers explains why AI is a cognitive revolution that could mirror the Industrial Revolution’s impact on blue-collar workers—but this time, it’s coming for white-collar jobs.
They discuss:
Why AI might shrink white-collar wages the same way automation hit factory jobs
How ownership and competition determine whether AI liberates or impoverishes society
Why Nvidia, not OpenAI, might be the real power behind the revolution
How education and universities must reinvent themselves in an AI world
What students, teachers, and professionals can do now to stay ahead
Wolfers’ clarity, humor, and economic insight make this one of the clearest explanations of AI’s long-term impact on society and policy.
About the Guest:Justin Wolfers is a Professor of Economics and Public Policy at the University of Michigan and a Visiting Professor at the University of New South Wales. His research spans labor markets, happiness, macroeconomics, and public policy. Named by the IMF as one of the top 25 economists under 45 shaping global thought, Wolfers is also a frequent contributor to The New York Times and a recurring guest on Scott Galloway’s Prof G Markets.YouTube: @JustinWolfers X: https://x.com/JustinWolfersWeb: www.nber.org/~jwolfers

We often praise the growth mindset—and rightly so. But what if fixed beliefs, when earned and chosen, are just as important for confidence, identity, and resilience?
In this solo episode, Nick explores the hidden strengths of a fixed mindset. Drawing from psychology, personal experience, and years of coaching students, Nick challenges the idea that all fixed beliefs are limiting—and makes the case for strategic identity as a source of power.
🎯 Topics covered:
The original definition of a fixed mindset (and where it’s misunderstood)
Why earned identity can boost performance

Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman (SBK) joins The Nick Standlea Show to talk about his new book Rise Above: Overcome a Victim Mindset, Empower Yourself, and Realize Your Full Potential. From his early years in special education to earning a PhD and becoming one of psychology’s most engaging voices, SBK shares powerful stories, science-backed insights, and mindset-shifting strategies for anyone looking to take back control of their life. We dive into why the victim mindset is so seductive, how social media rewards helplessness, and why sensitivity can be a superpower when embraced the right way. This is a must-watch for anyone who wants to live with more agency, authenticity, and purpose.
🎯 Big Takeaway from the Episode with Scott Barry KaufmanYou are not powerless—no matter what you've been through.Victimhood may be real, but staying in a victim mindset is a choice. Empowerment begins when you stop waiting to be saved and start saying, “Yes, this happened… and now what?”
Throughout the episode, SBK drives home that:
Trauma doesn't have to define you.
Sensitivity isn't weakness—it’s a superpower, if you own it.
The algorithm—and culture—might reward helplessness, but real growth happens when you reclaim your agency.
Whether you’ve faced real adversity or just feel stuck, Rise Above offers the mindset shifts, language, and tools to stop blaming the world—and start building a better one, starting from within.

Can plunging into freezing water actually boost your workouts, improve mental health, and improve libido? Professor Thomas Seager, co-founder of Morozko Forge (they built Joe Rogan's home ice bath), thinks so—and he's got the data to back it up.
In this episode of The Nick Standlea Show, we dive into the emerging science behind cold exposure and its surprising effects on metabolism, mood, and stress resilience. Whether you’re a seasoned cold-plunger or cold-curious, this conversation will leave you thinking differently about discomfort, healing, and health.
⚠️ Disclaimer:This episode explores the science and personal experiences behind cold plunging as a tool for mental clarity, stress relief, and metabolic health. While many of the claims discussed are supported by emerging research, others remain anecdotal or under-studied. Cold exposure may offer real benefits, but it is not a substitute for medical treatment. Individuals with chronic health conditions—especially hypertension, thyroid disorders, or hormone imbalances—should consult a healthcare professional before starting any extreme cold therapy.
The views expressed are those of the guest and do not constitute medical advice.
What We Covered:✅ How cold plunges activate brown fat and supports metabolism✅ The "dive reflex" and parasympathetic nervous system response✅ Why cold plunges might improve focus, resilience, and libido✅ Whether plunging before or after workouts is a good idea ✅ The role of cold in regulating stress and boosting mood⚠️ Claims about diabetes, thyroid function, or testosterone remain unproven in clinical settings and need more controlled studies
Takeaway:Cold plunges are a powerful form of hormetic stress—challenging in the short term, but potentially beneficial in the long term. Just like lifting weights, the key is proper use, gradual adaptation, and listening to your body.
💡 "Start cold enough to gasp, stay long enough to shiver, and always prioritize safety."

● Real-World Examples: We'll draw upon compelling examples like the British cycling team's success through marginal gains and the exponential growth experienced when learning a musical instrument or investing consistently.
● Practical Strategies: Learn how to apply the principle of compounding to your own life, whether you're aiming to improve your health, learn a new skill, build a business, or achieve any other meaningful goal.

Explore the concept of 'flow'—the state of optimal experience. The book 'Flow' was written by Dr. Mike Csikszentmihalyi in 1990. I worked for Dr. Mike for six years as a research associate (yes, I know he signed his books 'Mihaly,' but he always insisted I call him 'Mike') . He was an amazing mentor and friend and he is greatly missed. In honor of his birthday, I cleaned up the audio on a lecture he delivered on flow and added some visuals.
Dive Deeper: Discover the attributes of the flow state, such as intense focus, a sense of clarity, and the merging of action and awareness. Understand how deep engagement can lead to enhanced happiness and productivity. Learn about the benefits of being in flow, including increased creativity, better performance, and greater overall satisfaction in life.

Students often rely on ineffective study methods such as rereading and highlighting. However, these methods do not lead to deep understanding and long-term retention of information.
One effective strategy is retrieval practice, which involves testing oneself on the material to actively engage with it and identify areas of weakness. Self-testing helps students recognize what they know and what they need to review. Another important technique is interleaving or mixing up different types of practice, which better simulates real-world situations and helps students recognize cues and apply strategies accordingly. These strategies are applicable not only to academics but also to sports and other domains.
The conversation explores the concept of desirable difficulties and the importance of struggle in learning. It discusses the benefits of interleaving and mixed practice over blocked practice, as well as the challenges of implementing these strategies in the classroom. The conversation also touches on the need for objective feedback and the role of long-term retention in effective learning.
The potential for transforming the education system is discussed, with examples of schools and teachers successfully implementing these techniques. The conversation covers various topics related to effective learning, including the importance of testing and retrieval practice, the impact of AI on the legal profession, the role of test anxiety, the myth of learning styles, and the need for evidence-based instructional techniques.
The guests also discuss the positive impact of using data to track progress and the importance of experimentation and objective feedback in improving learning outcomes.
Takeaways:* Rereading and highlighting are ineffective study methods that lead to familiarity but not deep understanding.* Retrieval practice, such as self-testing, helps students actively engage with the material and identify areas of weakness.* Interleaving or mixing up different types of practice is more effective than massed practice for long-term learning and real-world application.* These strategies are applicable not only to academics but also to sports and other domains. Desirable difficulties, such as interleaving and mixed practice, can lead to better long-term retention and understanding of material.* Implementing these strategies in the classroom can be challenging, as it requires a shift in teaching and learning approaches.* Objective feedback is crucial for students to recognize the effectiveness of these techniques.* The education system needs to prioritize long-term retention and understanding over short-term memorization and grades.* Examples of schools and teachers successfully implementing these techniques demonstrate their effectiveness and potential for transforming education. Testing and retrieval practice are essential for effective learning.* Test anxiety can be reduced through frequent testing and familiarization with the testing format.* Learning styles have no scientific evidence to support their effectiveness.* Data-driven learning and objective feedback are crucial for tracking progress and improving learning outcomes.* Experimentation and evidence-based practices are key to enhancing learning effectiveness.
Sound Bites:"The typical student chooses to read material, highlight it, underline it, then reread it before the exam. And there's so many better ways they could be spending their time.""Retrieval practice is just simply either the teacher gives you a test or you test yourself and you start practicing getting information out of memory.""Retrieval practice produces better long-term memory, increases accuracy of knowing what you know and don't know, and increases efficiency of learning material you couldn't retrieve.""If you want people to pass the bar exam, you want them testing themselves and you testing them."

Why does regulating social media for kids remain an unresolved challenge? This episode discusses the significant age gap in congressional leadership, highlighting the advanced ages of key figures like Chuck Grassley and Dianne Feinstein, and questions their ability to grasp modern digital dilemmas.
The rant covers the alarming spread of misinformation on social media, as demonstrated by an MIT study showing that lies spread six times faster than the truth. The episode also examines the role of algorithms in promoting divisive and false content, contributing to the rising levels of anxiety, depression, and self-harm among young people.
I critique the influence of lobbying efforts by tech giants like Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, in preventing regulatory measures. Despite these challenges, the episode ends on a hopeful note, urging collective action to protect children from the adverse effects of unregulated social media, drawing parallels to past successful public health and safety campaigns.
Tune in for an insightful discussion on the intersection of technology, politics, and the well-being of our youth, and join the call to action for meaningful change.

1 hr 17 min
In this episode of the Nick Standlea Show, we journey into the world of psychedelic therapies, exploring the use of psilocybin, MDMA, LSD, ketamine, and ayahuasca for treating conditions such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. We unpack the efficacy of psychedelics for treating PTSD, depression, anxiety, and maladies. We also examine the potential dangers of unregulated psychedelics and discuss the importance of set, setting, and integration in psychedelic therapy to amplify positive outcomes.
Nick's guest is Brad Burge, a Stanford University alumni who has devoted his professional life to psychedelic research as the communications director for Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) and at his own PR firm for the psychedelic industry, Integration Communications.
Brad shares his personal mental health journey and the positive role that psychedelics played within it. The conversation turns to MDMA therapy for PTSD, illustrating its transformation from recreational drug to potential therapeutic treatment. We explore the FDA approval process, the funding potential, the possible shift in cultural and political perspectives, and the emergence of an industry centered around psychedelic therapy.
We discuss the missteps of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Program, but also emphasize responsible usage and regulated control of psychedelics.
We explore the role of Ketamine in treating mental health issues, particularly depression. A discussion on off-label prescribing, accessibility, effectiveness, and potential abuses highlights the complex reality of the field.
Ultimately, the episode underscores the need for responsible, systematic, and well-regulated administration of psychedelic therapy. The dialogue seeks to address the lack of robust and accessible support systems, touches on how the pharma industry fits into the psychedelic therapy landscape, and highlights the importance of educating providers about the process of integration after a psychedelic experience.
This episode is a must-listen for those interested in the field of psychedelic therapy, public health policy, and alternative treatments for mental health.

Dr. Donald D. Hoffman offers us the chance to take the red pill, stay in Wonderland, and show us how deep the rabbit hole goes.
In this conversation, best-selling author of "The Case Against Reality" and UCI professor emeritus Don Hoffman takes us on a journey through cutting-edge research that points to an interconnected consciousness beyond space and time, that could potentially be the true architect of our reality (and others).
In a conversation that challenges the norms, Dr. Hoffman backs up his bold claims with research that spans evolutionary biology, game theory, neuroscience, philosophy, high-energy physics, and theoretical mathematics, and discusses his newest discovery -- 'positive geometries' that exist independent of space and time.
What is consciousness? What is death? What happens when we meditate? We discuss these questions and more. Prepare to question your most fundamental beliefs about existence as Dr. Hoffman presents his theories on the illusory nature of reality (spoiler: we're living in a simulation).

In recent years, the relevance of SAT and ACT tests in college admissions has been questioned, prompting some colleges to switch to test-optional policies. However, extensive research and data analysis now suggest that this may not have been the best approach.
New articles in the NY Times and Forbes reveal that standardized test scores are the single most powerful predictors of college grades, college graduation rates, graduate school placement, and job placement. Unlike high school grades, which have been marred by inflation, SAT and ACT scores provide a level playing field for assessing students' college readiness. Even for students from less privileged backgrounds, a good test score often signifies their capability to thrive in an academic setting.
However, the reluctance of administrators to reintroduce standardized tests isn’t so much about concern for the fairness of the tests or the lack of knowledge about their potential benefits. It seems to be more about the potential political backlash they may encounter in doing so. The surge in applications and subsequent financial benefits a university enjoys being “test-optional” also plays a part. Thus, while many colleges may maintain their test-optional status, they increasingly favor applicants with strong SAT and ACT scores.
There appears to be a growing myth that standardized tests only benefit privileged students, thereby leading to biased college admissions. This argument is challenged using data that shows the greater predictability of a student's success by standardized test scores as compared to their high school GPA. Contrary to popular belief, the SAT and ACT are seen not as hurdles but as lifelines for students from less renowned high schools – allowing them to demonstrate their potential in a widely recognized and standardized manner.
As the admissions process continues to evolve, the role of standardized tests will undoubtedly remain pivotal. Though not perfect, these tests serve as substantial evidence of a student’s readiness to handle high-level academic work and are seen as a determinant of their probability of succeeding in college – and beyond. Therefore, for students looking to increase their chances of admission into top universities and earn substantial scholarships, preparing for these standardized tests might just be the secret key.
We must recognize that while it may not completely eradicate the flaws in the admissions process, standardized testing does provide a more transparent, equal-opportunity platform for all students to demonstrate their capabilities and potential. Thus, until a more predictive tool emerges, standardized testing looks set to continue playing a significant role in college admissions.

🎙️✨ Louis CK's hilarious take on flight delays hits close to home because, let's admit it, we've all been there. Complaining about minor inconveniences when we live in a world of convenience. ✈️🤣
This bit serves as a reminder of how we tend to overlook the miraculous surrounding us daily. From pocket-sized supercomputers to AI conversations, innovations that were once unthinkable are now part of our routine.
But here's the catch: familiarity breeds indifference.
We become accustomed to these conveniences, forgetting the marvel they truly are. So, what can we do?
Let's take a page from Seth Godin's story about psychological framing.
By shifting our perspective and framing trivial inconveniences as what they are—tiny speed bumps in a world of unparalleled ease—we open the door to gratitude and wonder.
This mindset shift allows us to channel our time and energy towards what truly matters, focusing on personal growth, meaningful projects, and doing the work to achieve the change in the world we want to see.

Context is Everything

A short story about my kids that demonstrated how context is everything.
We often think we know where everyone is coming from, what their agenda is, what their history is, who they are, but in reality, we can’t ever see the whole picture.
What can we do about that?
We can choose.
Choose to be conscious of what that other person might be going through.
Choose to be aware of the fact that whatever the situation is, we don’t have all the information.
Choose to give people a little grace. Choose to give some to yourself too.
If we push ourselves to pay attention, really pay attention to others, and what they might be dealing with, we’ll have options for how to deal with them. We’ll notice things about them, we’ll be slightly better versions of ourselves. We’ll at least move the needle in the direction of kindness and decency -- and that's a world I'd like my kids to grow up in.

Two priests are driving down the highway... This is the beginning of a joke I told at my grandfather's funeral. It was a risk, a deviation from the expected script of somberness. What followed was a lesson in the unexpected rewards that come from taking little risks when we step outside our comfort zones.

Leo Vieira: Lessons from Jiu-Jitsu for Life
Dec 1, 2023
Dec 1, 2023
1 hr 57 min
Today I’m speaking with world champion jujitsu competitor Leo Vieira. He’s known as the Yoda of Jujitsu because of his ability to take lessons from a lifetime of overcoming challenges on the mat and to impart that knowledge to others how to live a better, fuller life. He did not disappoint, dropping one nugget of wisdom after another. He talks about growing up poor in the rough part of Rio Dejanero, leveraging competition to change his life, he shares insights into his epic battle with MMA beast Mark Kerr, he got me to open up about the first punch I ever took in the face and my walk of shame afterward, and shares lessons from life that we can all learn from.
Leo Vieira is one of the most successful Jiu-Jitsu competitors of his generation. He’s a two-time ADCC world champion and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championships gold medal winner. After retiring as a competitor, he created Checkmat, a Jiu-jitsu team that has trained numerous world champions and inspired thousands of jiu-jitsu students across the world. Checkmat's presence stretches across the globe, from the Rio de Janeiro favelas, to more than 500 dojos on 6 continents, including, Germany, Australia, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal, Morocco, Israel, China, Serbia, Qatar, among many other countries, along with more than 100 locations in the USA.
Leo is also the ONE FC Championship Vice President of Grappling, one of the biggest promoters worldwide of martial arts events.
Despite all that Leo does, he still finds time to pop into his various dojos in the southern California area to teach students and impart lessons from a lifetime of experience in jiu-jitsu. I can attest to this personally when I spent a few minutes grappling with him at Dojo by Leo Viera in Seal Beach, during which time he man-handled me like a child, all the while keeping a smile on his face.
